Engineering Hiring & Staffing Trends for 2026

Staffing Design Engineering Lab

At Sigma Design our staffing team is shaping the future of engineering by vetting, hiring and placing the very best talent for every engineering role. Since our team keeps a close eye on the engineering labor market, we asked them what they see in store for 2026.

"While the overall labor market might remain cool, the market for west-coast engineers continues to heat up," notes account manager Emily Erskine. In November when ADP reported a nationwide loss of 37,000 private-employer jobs, the Pacific West region actually added 54,000 jobs. (source: ADP National Employment Report, Dec 3 2025)

“We’re continuing to see strong demand for skilled mechanical and electronics engineers, matching BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) projections that see employment in both roles increasing,” noted account manager Mathew Grothe. The BLS has projected demand for mechanical engineers to grow 11% with electronic engineer demand gaining 9% through 2033.

Based on both BLS demand signals and ADP wage resilience we expect 2026 demand to remain strong for:

  • Industrial, manufacturing, and process engineers
  • Electrical & electronics engineers tied to controls, automation, and hardware
  • Engineering technologists, test technicians, and quality technicians
  • Software and computer occupations that support manufacturing

Account manager Emily Erskine summed up the situation nicely, “with these two trends: strong demand for engineers and a decline in manufacturing, we expect employers to broadly favor versatility and near-term ROI in their new engineering hires.”

Here at Sigma Design we’re equipped to exceed expectations on both counts. Our 30+ year track record of engineering and product design excellence means we know how to vet, hire and retain talent, and our experience staffing hundreds of client positions means we know how to fit the right person to the right job.
